Works during the period 2000-2004

The year 1999 was very important in my artistic career, I become more reflective about the work I was doing and its purposes; spending much more time sketching and remaking old stories I had developed before. The frequent visits to London exhibitions as well as my trip to Taiwan Roc ( 2000) and New York (2002) changed my perception of working. On the one hand I was fascinated by the excellency of technical expertise and freshness discovered in Chinese ink painting and in the other hand installation; video and performance works reframed my concepts.
In that period I started to construct thematic series such as Family; Letters; Highway, Circus  and Musicians. The images were constructed  from ideas in old sketchbooks. In a certain way I was re-working the universe of figures created through the last eight years.
In Family series; I reflected about my own experience and feelings as a mother; Letters were more like a game of symbolic associations.  Those two series were mostly watercolours and acrylic small size paintings. In the same way Musicians and Circus  are series of small acrylic and oil paintings based on my sketchbooks’ notes.

During 2000 I had a commission to paint a Last supper,  it was my first religious painting and that thrilled me, but in the end I treated it in the same way as family or letters. In the same year for the exhibition ‘Conversa a três’; where Family and letters series were exhibited, I made a special triptych in acrylic painting trying to illustrate my very old and important friendship with Emilia Lopes and Anabela Lacerda.
Highway, was built after a poem by Birgitta Jonsdottir mainly watercolours and digital collages The initial idea was to make a performance with Birgitta and  circus' artists but in the end I finish to use the Highway studies to make a big ceramic panel in traditional Portuguese tiles  (blue and white).

Art become for me synonym of collaboration, resistance and endurance. The first experience of collaborative work in 1999 with Terra Sem Fronteiras , involving links with poets, musicians through performance and installation was my first attempt to develop collaborative projects, the second experience as coordinator of the art event  UTUTU/eARTh ( Vila Nova de Cerveira, 2001,  Portugal)  was the confirmation that collaboration between all the arts and technology was possible within a framework of art without authorship, creating interactive art products in the virtual community.  Involved in projects such as Art Day   I realised that art and new communication technologies could open unknown ways for artists.

2003-2004
Started a blog ( http://artesvisuaiseduc.blogspot.com/) with Vitor Silva about art and art education; it helps me to clarify my ideas.

This a time for pause and reflection; still working on traditional media; trying to learn  chinese ink painting and drawing everyday. The second show with r2001 at Portugal gave me reasons to believe that collaborative art works through multimedia are important , especially when it focus on social perspectives; it is a way to show diversity in the global world. Started conflicts series.  I become interested in art works  like Alfredo Jarr and Bill Viola; and in activist movements. But I need introspection now; I need to go back to my little series and tell simple stories, continuing the series circus, started a new one called 'the gaze', 'the gaze' is more or less the continuation of the watrerportraits series, but with a small difference, the faces are looking at you and in the some time looking inside.Started a collaborative project with Emilia Lopes and Anabela Lacerda: Interpretations of the literary work by Mozambican the writer Mia Couto.
